A simple method for measuring the control of blood loss in thrombocytopenic
rats and mice is described. The administration of lyophilized platelets, brain phospholipid extract
and soya bean extract failed to correct the blood loss in the thrombocytopenic
animal. The results obtained with this method have failed to support the effectiveness of "platelet substitutes" in in vivo systems and reaffirm the requisites of
viability and recirculation for platelet transfusions.
