Therapy of Polycythemia Vera with Myleran

NIEL WALD 1, TAKASHI HOSHINO 1, and MARY E. SEARS 1

1 Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, Hiroshima, Japan, a field agency of the National Academy of Sciences—National Research Council operated in collaboration with the Japanese National Institute of Health with funds supplied by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Myleran was used in the therapy of nine relapses of polycythemia vera in five patients. Clinical examinations, blood studies, and, in three instances, radioisotope tracer tests before and after treatment demonstrated the effectiveness, safety and simplicity of the treatment. Further trial of Myleran therapy in polycythemia vera seems warranted.
